What is Invisalign®?

Invisalign is a type of orthodontic treatment that uses clear, removable aligners to straighten teeth. It is an alternative to traditional metal braces and is popular among both adults and teenagers who want to improve the alignment of their teeth discreetly.

The Invisalign treatment process begins with a consultation with a dentist trained in Invisalign treatment. During this consultation, the dentist will assess your teeth and bite to determine if Invisalign is right for you.

If you are a candidate for Invisalign, a custom treatment plan will be created for you. This plan will involve a series of clear aligners that are custom-made for your teeth. You will wear each set of aligners for about two weeks, removing them only to eat, drink, brush, and floss. As you progress through the series of aligners, your teeth will gradually move into their desired positions.

Invisalign aligners are virtually invisible when worn, making them a discreet option for straightening teeth. They are also removable, so you can continue to eat your favorite foods and maintain good oral hygiene throughout treatment.

How does Invisalign® work?

Invisalign is a popular orthodontic treatment that offers a discreet and convenient way to straighten teeth. The process starts with a consultation with an Invisalign-trained dentist or orthodontist, who will determine if Invisalign is right for you.

A 3D scan or impression of your teeth is then taken to create a customized treatment plan. This plan shows the gradual movements your teeth will make over time. Based on this plan, a series of clear aligners are custom-made for you.

You’ll wear these aligners for 20 to 22 hours a day, removing them only to eat, drink, brush, and floss. The aligners are virtually invisible and comfortable to wear. Every few weeks, you’ll visit your dentist or orthodontist to check your progress and receive your next set of aligners.

Once you’ve worn all your aligners, your treatment is complete. Your dentist may recommend retainers to help maintain your new smile. Invisalign offers an effective and discreet alternative to traditional braces, providing a straighter smile without the hassle of metal brackets and wires.

The aligners should be worn for 22 hours a day and are switched out with the next one in the series every one week. Over a period of months, the aligners will slowly move teeth into place, making one minor adjustment at a time that is targeted to specific teeth. This helps your teeth to remain comfortable as they are moved into position at a manageable pace. Once you are done wearing your aligners, your teeth should be perfectly straight.

What is the difference between Invisalign® and traditional braces?

Invisalign and traditional braces are two common orthodontic treatments used to straighten teeth and correct bite issues. One of the key differences between them is visibility. Invisalign uses clear, removable aligners that are virtually invisible when worn, making them a more discreet option compared to traditional braces, which use metal brackets and wires that are visible on the teeth. This difference in appearance can be particularly appealing to adults and teens who may feel self-conscious about wearing braces.

Another important distinction is removability. Invisalign aligners are removable, allowing patients to take them out to eat, brush, and floss. This makes it easier to maintain oral hygiene compared to traditional braces, which are fixed onto the teeth and require special care to clean around the brackets and wires. However, it’s important to note that aligners must be worn for 20 to 22 hours a day for the treatment to be effective.

In terms of comfort, Invisalign aligners are made of smooth plastic, which is more comfortable to wear than the metal brackets and wires of traditional braces. Braces can sometimes cause irritation to the cheeks, lips, and gums, especially shortly after they are first placed or adjusted. Invisalign aligners are generally more comfortable in this regard.

The duration of treatment can vary depending on the complexity of the case, but in general, Invisalign treatment may be faster than traditional braces for some patients. However, compliance with wearing the aligners is crucial for successful treatment. The effectiveness of both treatments is comparable, and the choice between them depends on the individual’s needs, preferences, and the recommendation of their dentist.
